Bryan Clayton is a Tennessee native who moved to Nashville a decade ago to build his company. Michael Warren/Getty ImagesWhen I moved here, I'd go out on Broadway for the dive bars and live music. You could hear live music from the best musicians without the downsides of big cities, such as generic food and bar chains. People started coming from around the world to enjoy live music and sports without spending a fortune. AdvertisementAfter living in Nashville for a decade, I still believe it's the best city in the world for a weekend.

The shift to remote work early in the pandemic allowed wealthy residents to ditch big cities in droves and set up shop in smaller cities and towns nearby. While the surging costs of housing and the new freedom of remote work helped trigger this mass migration, small cities have been laying the groundwork over the last decade to entice these big-city refugees. Then came the pandemic, and remote work suddenly made small cities a viable home for wealthy professionals. For the past two decades, cities have turned to an economic development strategy I've deemed "the city authentic." It spiked even more during the pandemic when change of addresses from New York City jumped a whopping 787%.

It's not too late to book a short-term vacation rental on Cape Cod this summer. Even as the vacation hot spot enters its busy season, locals are seeing the demand for vacation rentals soften. The occupancy rate is down 20% from last year, according to The Cape Cod & Islands Association of Realtors. After listing those homes on sites like Airbnb and Vrbo, the supply of vacation rentals is through the roof. The real estate group says the average daily rate has climbed to $619 up from $525 last summer.

“You see them all over most major coastal beaches during the summertime.”A Tommy Bahama beach chair in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. Tommy Bahama doesn’t make its chairs and beach goods. Instead, Tommy Bahama licenses its name and design for the beach goods and receives royalties from sales at retailers. So they came up with “‘Tommy Bahama’ because I liked the resonation of the two words together.”The founders had recently left the company, and the country was suffering through the Great Recession, which dragged down Tommy Bahama sales. Correction: Tommy Bahama CEO Doug Wood said the company sells up to two million of its beach chairs a year and 700,000 umbrellas annually.
